NEWS AT HOOVER: (click on item for more information)

From Jon Denlinger (DOW) - "Hoover fingerling saugeye were stocked on May 28th 2009, as part of the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s established saugeye stocking program.  The Division of Wildlife routinely stocks saugeye fingerlings at a rate of 50-300 fingerling/acre throughout Ohio to create and maintain populations of this popular sportfish.  Hoover began receiving stocked saugeye during 1988, when the saugeye stocking program was in its infancy in Ohio; over the past 20 years, our ability to produce saugeye has increased and generally stabilized which has allowed us to expand and maintain consistent saugeye stocking rates.  The stocking rates during 1993 and 1994 were experimentally high, and we determined later that these rates were higher than necessary to create a quality saugeye fishery at Hoover – we stabilized these stocking rates in subsequent years and have been consistent since.

The stocking rate a reservoir receives depends on a variety of factors, including the number of available saugeye fingerlings raised by our hatcheries, a reservoir’s ability to support these predatory sportfish, prey availability (primarily young-of-the-year gizzard shad), habitat availability (temperature, oxygen, and physical structures), and access to the fishery by anglers.  Because of Hoover Reservoir’s abundant young-of-the-year gizzard shad (typically ~90/m2 !) and its close proximity to Columbus with nearly 1.8 million people, combined with relative stocking success, Hoover has been stocked heavily at about 225-250 saugeye fingerlings/acre over the past 12 years with hopes of providing excellent fishing opportunities to a large number of anglers.  We hit this target again during 2009, stocking ~226 saugeye fingerlings/acre into Hoover Reservoir.

As with naturally-reproducing fish species (crappie and black bass, for example), stocked saugeye survival throughout Ohio varies annually and is dependant on a variety of factors including habitat, water quality, and other environmental dynamics (temperature, sunshine, rainfall, and wind), food webs (prey availability – timing and amount), and predation by other fish.  All of these factors clearly impact young fish survival, and most are unfortunately mostly out of our control as fishery managers.  Stocking a reservoir with a set number of saugeye on an annual basis doesn’t guarantee consistent stocking “success” based on all of these factors.  What we can do, however, is stock reservoir systems with appropriate sportfish densities based on our knowledge of the reservoir characteristics, capitalizing on systems that will likely create excellent fishing opportunities."

From Elayna Grody (WSM): "Practice safe fishing.  Just yesterday, ODNR put out a news report that the first known European Ruff (fish) had been caught on Lake Erie.  This is an invasive fish that will out-compete the native fish and negatively effect the whole "Food chain" let alone the enjoyment of fishing.

There are also many invasive plants that mess up the lake ecosystems by taking over, negatively impact the food chain and have very negative effects on boating and fishing as well.  I have recently found some really good information about how this stuff gets spread around - usually on our boats or in our bait buckets.

So please practice "safe fishing and boating" by following steps to not infect other bodies (of water)When you leave a body of water:

- Remove any visible mud, plants, fish or
animals before transporting recreational     equipment.
-  Drain water from equipment (boat, motor,
trailer, live wells) before transporting.
-  Clean and dry anything that comes into
contact with water (equipment, clothing, dogs, etc.).
- Never release plants, fish or animals into
a body of water unless they came out of that body of water.
See: www.ProtectYourWaters.net
All of us who use the water and those native wildlife and plants that live in it, thank you."

Rich Rutherford of Columbus Div. of Water passes along this information regarding the temperature readings of Hoover being available along with other data points, including "real time" levels at USGS Hoover Data.  He reports, " The data sonde is generally parked at approximately 2 m when not doing profiles.  This is the reported surface temperature (at 1 hour intervals).  Also starting at midnight, it is currently set to do profiles every 4 hours.  These currently range down to 15 m."  You'll note when you go the site, you can select readings of various factors from a period up to 31 days and can call up either a chart or a table.
